The Large Reactor is a power production block in Space Engineers. This generator has the highest power output rate.
The Large Warfare Reactor is a visual variant with the same functionality and same recipe; you need the Warfare 2 Pack DLC to build it.
Usage
Use the Large Reactor to generate power from uranium. The reactor has no settings other than on or off.
Comparison
On a Large Grid ship or station, the Large Reactor is less space efficient (MW/m³) at about 26% less output compared to the same volume of
Small Reactors.
On a Small Grid ship, a Large Reactor is more space efficient (MW/m³) at about 9% more output than the same volume of
Small Reactors.
Uranium consumption can be calculated as 1 MWh per Kg of Uranium Ingots. For example, in a
Large Reactor running at full power (300MW for large grid, 14.75MW for small grid), 1 kg of Uranium would be consumed in 12 seconds (large grid) or 244 seconds (small grid). However, because most reactors do not operate at full capacity continuously, your Uranium supply will generally last much longer in typical usage scenarios. This applies to reactors on both small and large grid ships.
Inventory
With Realistic settings, the Large Reactor has an inventory with a capacity of 1,000L for small ships and 8,000L for large ships. The inventory only accepts Uranium Ingots as fuel. If any of the inventory ports are attached to a conveyor system, the reactor will automatically attempt to pull
Uranium Ingots when it runs low.
Power
You must place Uranium Ingots into the reactor's inventory for it to generate power in survival mode. In Creative Mode, no Uranium is used up to generate power, but the maximum output stays the same.
Grids draw power from reactors only if the output of renewable power providers (such as Solar Panels, Wind turbines) is not sufficient. This ensures that no Uranium is wasted.
- Max output on a large-grid ship or station: 300 MW
- Max output on a small-grid ship: 14.75 MW
Troubleshooting
When the light is yellow, the Large Reactor is out of fuel. If the Large Reactor does not produce any power, first make sure its inventory contains (or is conveyored to an inventory containing) Uranium Ingots.
Despite being a power producing block, the Large Reactor depends on the conveyor system to pull fuel. A completely "dead" ship will require some other temporary source of power (e.g. a temporary solar panel) to jump-start the conveyor systems. Or at least you need direct access to one reactor to feed it manually with uranium ingots.
Construction
If progression is enabled, build a Basic Refinery first to unlock it.
Large Reactors have two conveyor ports on neighboring sides and they have mount points only on these two sides. They are not airtight.
You can build Large Reactors on large and small grids. Both are 3x3x3 blocks in size:
Large Reactor for large ships measures 7.5m x 7.5m x 7.5m
Large Reactor for small ships measures 1.5m x 1.5m x 1.5m
A Small Reactor is a different block from a
Large Reactor on a small ship.
The
Large Reactor is twenty-seven times the size of the
Small Reactor (3x3x3 instead of 1x1x1).
