Engineers place Blocks to build "grids", such as Small Grids, Large Grids, or Stations.

Grids are made of blocks, blocks are made of components, components are made of materials, materials are made of ores.

There are currently 465 Blocks with pages in the Space Engineers wiki.

The dimensions of a single 1x1x1 block are 0.5 meters to an edge for small-grid blocks, and 2.5 meters to an edge for large-grid blocks, thus small-grid blocks are about 1/125th (0.8%) the volume of large-grid blocks. However, this does not mean the mass and costs of large-grid blocks are reduced to 0.8%.

In Creative Mode you place blocks for free. In Survival Mode, you must weld blocks which uses up Components. As the block is being welded, it will go through 3-5 stages of visual change, starting with a basic framework and then going through various stages of completion.
