The Toolbar is the user interface at the bottom of your screen that lets you perform many game functions quickly. Some players call it G-menu, Toolbar Config, or Config Menu.

Press a number from 1 key to 9 key to select a slot.

What's the Toolbar?

When starting a new game, assign your commonly used actions to your toolbar:

  • Handheld tools or weapons
  • Consumable such as MedKits
  • Emotes
  • Blocks you want to build
  • Grid actions such as docking, handbrake, etc

You can reconfigure your toolbars any time, as needed.

Toolbars presets are saved per game, per player, and per grid:

  • one personal toolbar for player actions
  • one toolbar of grid actions for each cockpit you sit in

There are 9 configurable toolbars with 9 configurable slots each, allowing you to configure 81 functions in total. Only one Toolbar (nine slots) is visible at the same time.

Which tool is best to push buttons, pick up items?

Press 0 key to switch to an empty hand. The final slot with the hand symbol is pre-configured to de-select any functions and return you to an empty hand.

The empty hand is the best "tool" to push buttons, open/close doors, etc. To pick up dropped items such as ores in the world, aim an empty hand at the item until it's highlighted, and press F key.

In a ship cockpit, the empty slot deselects Block Tools/Block Weapons that you have assigned to Right.

How to select the large/small block variant?

Many blocks exist in a small and large-grid variant. After you select them on your toolbar, you see a ghost preview, and you wil be able to place them on either size grid. If you are facing a large or small grid with the ghost preview in hand, the game automatically selects the large or small block, respectively.

To manually toggle between small-grid and large-grid variants, if available, press R key, or press the same toolbar slot number a second time.

How to select block shape variants?

Many armor blocks have alternate shape variants, and related facilities and furniture pieces are conveniently grouped together. In the Config Menu, these blocks are marked with a Plus sign; hover the mouse over them to view the variants. When building, select the base block on your toolbar, then cycle through variants using the Middle scroll wheel.

How to control ships, rovers, bases

While being seated in a ship or rover, you are using the grid's toolbar. You can assign block actions from the grid's Control Panel Screen to Toolbar slots for quick access. Examples include locking landing gears and connectors when docking, pulling the handbrake, closing airlocks, etc. You can control all functional blocks, including merged and connected ones.

  1. Press G key.
  2. Press CTRL key+1 key to CTRL key+9 key to configure one of the nine toolbars.
  3. Find actions.
    Available filters for grid actions:
  4. Right-click a block and select an action from the menu to assign it to a free slot.
Or Left-drag the block into a slot and select an action from the menu.
  5. Right-click a slot to change its action, or select Remove to unassign if needed.

    • If it's a toggle action, the assigned slot displays the status, such as locked/unlocked or on/off etc.
    • If it's a block weapon, the assigned slot displays the remaining ammo.
    • If it's a block weapon/block tool, it is assigned to Right.

How to trigger several actions

From a cockpit toolbar, you can set up either an individual block or a block group. You may want to create, for example, a group for braking thrusters, for batteries, for block tools, and so on, and trigger their actions all together.

How to use primary/secondary tool functions

The easiest way is to toggle the tool on/off:

  1. Use the All Blocks filter to add a Block Tool/Block Weapon to the toolbar.
  2. Press the slot number to toggle the primary tool action on/off.

To enable primary and secondary functions of Block Tools or Block Weapons:

  1. Use the Block Tools or Block Weapons filter to add it to the toolbar.
  2. Press the slot number to activate/deactivate that tool/weapon for mouse button control.
    • Left-click to trigger primary function.
    • Right-click to trigger the secondary function.

Examples of primary and secondary functions:

  • For a drill, Left mines ores, and Right destroy voxels.
  • For a weapon, Left shoots, and Right zooms in for aiming down sights. (Ship weapons cannot zoom in.)
  • In creative mode, Left places a block, and Right deletes it.
  • In survival mode, Left places a block, and Right does nothing.

And so on.

Trivia

Did you know?

  • You can trigger emotes while seated, but only the top half of the body will be animated.
  • Sensors and Timer Blocks etc. also use toolbar actions when you set them up.
  • You cannot add building blocks to your toolbar while seated in a cockpit. For details how to build from the cockpit, see Block Placement Mode.

Troubleshooting: Why Can't I Use This!?

There are several reasons why you cannot select an item for the toolbar:

Engineers in Survival Mode can only configure weapons/tools/consumables that they have in their inventories. For example, you can only assign and use a medkit slot if you have a medkit on your person. Unavailable items will be grayed out.

When progression is enabled, available blocks are limited until you unlock them. Read about Progression to find out how.

You can drag any block into a toolbar slot, but in Survival Mode, you can only place the block if the engineer has the necessary base components in the inventory.

Lastly, some blocks are only available if you have bought the respective DLC Packs.
