Space Pod

The Respawn Space Pod or just Space Pod is the default large grid respawn vessel for players that start in space. It is the space counterpart of the planetary Drop Pod, but it has a completely different design and is large grid instead of small grid. It can also be purchased at Trading Outposts.

Survival Equipment

This starter ship provides you with a Icon Block Survival Kit.png Survival Kit, a large grid Icon Block Small Cargo Container.png Small Cargo Container, and a bridge with life-support systems including an Air Vent, Oxygen Tank and O2 H2 Generator. Everything relies on two large grid Icon Block Battery.png Batteries and one Icon Block Hydrogen Engine.png Hydrogen Engine to power the vehicle.

It has ten Icon Block Ion Thruster.png Ion Thrusters, allowing it to fly short distances in space.

Like the Planetary Drop Pod, its seat reveals an S-10 Pistol and four S-10 Magazines, and if there is a trade station nearby, a Datapad with GPS coordinates.

Obtaining

Either you get it as your starter ship for free or you buy it at a space station later.

Spawning

Unless respawn ships have been disabled in the World Settings, the Space Pod can be selected in the respawn screen, listed as "Space Pod." It will spawn you in the vacuum of space, nearby other players if on a multiplayer server.

Buying

You can also purchase the Space Pod from Trading Outposts owned by Builder NPC Factions for 40 million Space Credits. When purchased this way, it does not count as a respawn ship, and so will not despawn. Note that while it is listed as "Space Pod" in the store, its grid name when purchased will be "Respawn Space Pod."

Usage

Mirroring the situation of players who start on a planet and build a space-faring ship, players who start in space proceed to build a planetary lander.

  • In multiplayer, the pod is by default temporary and disappears after you log out, or after you respawn in a new pod.
  • In singleplayer, the pod does not despawn by default; you can configure the pod's despawn behaviour in the World Settings.

Follow the general advice for how to convert the Drop Pod to a starter base before you log out.

Gather ice to keep the life support system running. If running out of ice, save oxygen by switching on and off the Air Vent manually, and pressurising the cockpit only when the door is closed. See also Airtightness for related advice.

The space pod does not have an Ore Detector, so either build one (loot parts from Cargo Drops), or spacewalk and use your Hand Drill to find resources on asteroids.

Since the space pod’s Icon Block Ion Thruster.png Ion thrusters are built for vacuum and zero gravity, do not attempt to steer this ship in an atmosphere or gravitational field. It is also quite slow since it lacks a Jump Drive. The ship is best suitable to visit NPC Space Stations and asteroids and the Moon.

Trivia

The space pod has been introduced in the major Space Engineers Release of February 28, 2019 that brought the game out of Early Access.

Judging by the blue colour scheme, these emergency pods are possibly produced by the Sol Cooperative faction.
