I agree that turning off inertial dampening is a great way to save energy on long journeys...but be careful if you're travelling in gravity.  You'll need to either turn inertial dampening on, or constantly "burn upward" to avoid unplanned contact with the ground.  One way around this is to turn on inertial dampening, and then turn off any thrusters that would fire to hinder your travel (i.e. reverse thrusters).  The dampening will take care of keeping you in the air, but won't slow down your forward progress.
