Use the Welder to assemble placed ship and station blocks from components. The Welder’s secondary role is as part of the Hacking game mechanic.
The Welder is one of the tools that every player spawns with. Y default, along with the Grinder and Hand Drill.
The upgraded versions of the Welder (Tool) weld increasingly faster than the standard Welder (Tool).
Welder | Speed | Reach |
---|---|---|
Standard | x 1.0 | x 1.0 |
Enhanced | x 1.5 | x 1.2 |
Proficient | x 2.0 | x 1.4 |
Elite | x 5.0 | x 1.6 |
Usage
Manual welding uses up your suits' energy reserves. For larger welding projects, use the ship-mounted Welder (Block).
How to equip the tool
- Make sure you have the Welder item in your inventory.
- Press G key to open the Toolbar config.
- Go to the Character Tools section.
- Drag the Welder Tool to a slot.
- Press ESC key to close the window.
- Press the slot number to equip the tool.
How to weld blocks
In survival mode, welding means you make blocks functional by adding components to them.
- Place some unwelded blocks.
- Make sure you have components in your inventory.
- Press the slot number to equip the Welder in your hand.
- -click an incomplete block to search the player's inventory for required components and immediately add them to the construction stockpile.
- -click and hold to add progress to construction at the expense of suit power.
- Watch the HUD tooltip on the right to see you how far you are.
Welding can make progress only if you have supplied the block's stockpile with components for the current step of construction. Each step must be completed in order, going from the bottom of the tooltip list to the top.
Tip: Double--click to switch the welder on (or off) without having to hold the mouse button pressed.
How to hack
The construction act of welding Computer components of a functional block assigns ownership, which is the reason this tool is also used for "illegally transferring" ship ownership. For details, see Hacking.
How to clear the path
When non-functional blocks (typically armor blocks) get damaged, they deform. You can weld away some of the deformation without using up components. Ironing out the deformation wrinkles is useful when trying to traverse ruins or wrecks, to clear the way.
Assembly
Craft the Welder (Tool) from the Tools tab of the Production tab of the Assembler with the materials listed below. Material values in the recipes reflect the "Realistic" setting.
